Yorkshire League (Level Play)

Bishop Monkton finish summer with a win

Bishop Monkton won their final Level Play League game against Ecclesall ( Shef. U3A) with a comfortable 11½ - 8½ game margin. 

The league result had been decided a number of weeks previously, so the match was played more on a serious/friendly basis. Early games were played in the pouring rain but the weather improved considerably as the day progressed.

A  strong BM team comprised: Dave Widdison, Trevor Wood, Colin Hunter and Andrea Widdison (captain for the day).

Bishop Monkton scored a convincing 15-5 win against their local rivals, Ripon Spa on a day when it rained almost non stop all day. The result reversed an 8-12 defeat earlier in the season.

Trevor Wood and Alan Ebbutt were on top form, winning all four of their singles and both of their doubles. Jack Upsall won three of his singles and his doubles.

After a day of rain, the sun came out in time for players to enjoy tea outside.

Ecclesall get their revenge

A strong Ecclesall team, playing at home, won 13-7 against a valiant Bishop Monkton team. Though a tough match, everyone was able to make some contribution to our final score.

A match peppered with 6-7 defeats

Our Level Play team went down to an 8-12 defeat against a strong Ripon team on May 17, but the outcome might have been reversed if we'd had more success on five 13th hoop deciders.

Jack Upsall was the man of the match winning three of his singles and one doubles. His comment: 'We're ready to gain our revenge at the return match'.

We leave it late to snatch a close win

Our team  made hard work of the opening match of the season in this year's Yorkshire Federation Level Play Golf Croquet League on April 26. The club hosted Ecclesall ( Sheffield  U3A) and came away with a very tight 11-9 victory on a particularly tough, cold  and windy April day. 

Trevor Wood and Dave Widdison led the way with three individual and two doubles wins with Andrea Widdison and Simon Horner playing supporting roles, both with an individual and doubles win each.

The club is hoping to defend the League title that it won for the first time last year.


Yorkshire League (Handicap) League

A 10-10 tie against Sheffield Croquet Club

The Bishop Monkton team played out an exciting home match against the Sheffield Croquet Club which ended in a 10-10 tie. Sheffield, who have not lost a match all season, were thus confirmed as Handicap League champions for 2017.

Another defeat at Sheffield

Despite all four players making some contribution to the scorecard, our team went down to a 6-14 defeat to Sheffield U3A Parkhead. Most of the match was played in the rain.

Sheffield Toby inflict a heavy defeat

Ths Bishop Monkton team found it difficult to come to terms with tricky lawns which called for skilled 'aiming off' and went down to a resounding 16-4 defeat.

The best performance came from Jack Upsall who won two on his singles and one of his doubles.

Good win against Lepton
A very successful home match against Lepton Croquet Club, with Bishop Monkton winning 15-5. 

Joint Men of the Match were Ian MacPherson and Patrick Davey who both won all four singles matches and both their double matches. 

Team: John Feeny, Ian MacPherson, Izzy Poyntz and Pat Davey.


Brodsworth gain their revenge

After having lost to Bishop Monkton earlier in the week in a friendly match, Brodworth gained their revenge by winning 12-8 in this Handicap League match played on their magnificent ground surrounded by stunning shrubberies.

The Monkton team was weakened due to the illness of one of the planned team, but grateful to Pat Field who stepped in at the last minute.

Jack Upsall was the best performer winning three of his singles and one doubles.

Murphy Shield

Beaten by a quartet of Handicap 3's

THE TEAMS enjoying an excellent lunch provided by their hosts.  

In the second round of this national competition. Bishop Monkton  went down 4½ - 2½ to a strong Ashby de la Zouch team. The Midlands team comprised four players on handicaps of  3 matched against our team with handcaps of 5,6,7 and 11.

Man of the match was Richard Field who won all four of his singles matches, following up on his four singles wins in the earlier round against Durham.

Narrow win over former holders

Bishop Monkton, entering this national competition for the first time, scored a narrow 4-3 victory in a preliminary round against Durham, former holders of the title.

Jack Upsall and Andrea Widdison had tough matches against two strong and on form Durham players, both with handicaps of 3.

On this occasion the win was a result of strong performances by Richard Field and Ian MacPherson, who both won all four of their singles matches.

In the next round of the competition Bishop Monkton will meet Ashby de la Zouch.



Remarkable one hoop defeat to local rivals

Bishop Monkton fought out a keenly fought away match with local rivals Ripon Spa, eventually going down by a single hoop - 146 against 147.

At the interval  Bishop Monkton held a 90-80 lead but after lunch the lead was slowly whittled down. Dave Widdison was the star performer for Bishop Monkton winning, with different partners, six of his seven doubles matches.The win for Ripon was cemented with a strong final round which brought them three wins and one defeat.

The previous day, in the Handicap League, Bishop Monkton tied with Sheffield Croquet Club 10-10, so close matches were a feature of the week.

Final push seals win for Bishop Monkton

Bishop Monkton played an exciting friendly match against The Dales. The match  consisted of six closely fought rounds.

At the end of round four rounds both clubs were tying 51 hoops each and by the end of round five the home team had squeezed  into the narrowest of leads by 66-64. The final round, however, was won in a very convincing manner giving  Bishop Monkton a victory by 84-73.

Bishop Monkton players were Pauline Houseman, Ian and Sara Mac Pherson, Patrick and  Gill Davey, Simon Horner, Izzy Poyntz, Colin Hunter,Dave Widdison and Andrea Widdison.  

Andrea, the captain for the day, thanked The Dales for the excellent croquet  and the great friendly rivalry between the clubs that made the day so enjoyable.


Keenly fought tussle against Durham

In their latest friendly match this season, Bishop Monkton scored a narrow victory over Durham by 119-109 hoops.  This followed a recent  tie against another North-East team, (Bishop) Auckand when the score finished on 108 - 108.

In this latest match Monkton took an early five hoop lead after the first round and, despite a few fluctuations, maintained their lead, increasing it slightly by the final round to 10 hoops.

Unusual result - teams tie on 108-108

After four hours play the match between Bishop Monkton and (Bishop) Auckland finished in a tie  on 108 v 108 - an extremely unusual outcome. 

Auckland went ahead early but the home team slowy reduced the lead until they were level after six rounds at 94 -94. Then the teams matched each other hoop for hoop in the final round, thus ending it with the 108 -108 scoreline.

Players said afterwards that most had never previously played in a match which ended in a tie so it was a new experience!

Keenly fought match against local rivals

Bishop Monkton played out a keenly fought match against their local rivals Ripon, enventually losing by  75 - 96.

After three round Monkton held a slender lead 38-36 but Ripon fought back and slowly overtook their visitors, finishing with a 21 hoop margin.

Comfortable win over Brodsworth Hall

Bishop Monkton started its season of friendlies against other Yorkshire clubs with a comfortable 102 - 75 home win over Brodsworth Hall.

For the home side this was an encourinjg start to a week which also includes a Yorkshire League match againt Brodsworth, but on Thursday the match is away from home.

The friendly team comprised:  Alan Ebbutt (captain), Trevor and Lesley Wood, Dave Widdison, Simon Horner, Richard Field, Patrick and Gill Davey and Ann Hales.
